Summary/Abstract: Volunteering is today one of the most dynamic phenomena of social life. On the spiritual development of Christian volunteers to a large extent depends not only the effectiveness of their ministry towards their brethren, but also the strength of their missionary influence. Pope Benedict XVI in the encyclical “Deus caritas est” has called volunteers to the „formation of the heart” (DCE 31) and in the motu proprio “Intima Ecclesiae natura” has called diocesan bishops to care for their theological and pastoral formation (Article 7, § 2). What essentially is this “formation of the heart” and what “proposals of spiritual life” should be submitted to the volunteers? One of the pastoral proposals, presented in this article, is to appeal to the model of brotherly love that Jesus Christ has left us. The Church’s charitable activity is an attempt to imitate Christ in His unconditional love for man humiliated in one’s dignity by sin and its consequences, which include, among others: material, existential, psychological and social poverty, but also spiritual misery.
