Summary/Abstract: The countries of the region of the Western Balkans represent a real challenge for the European Union, their accession criteria to this Union being linked to the political and economic aspects based on the EU laws and the policy. In spite of the fact that the Western Balkans are made up of states which are in different positions from the point of view of the standards imposed by the EU, its enlargement will continue in the future depending on the individual performances of each state, according to the required standards. Therefore the states of the Western Balkans are different from the point of view of their accession criteria to the European Union and from the point of view of the moment of their accession.
