Summary/Abstract: Boredom as a cultural phenomenon appeared at the end of the XVIII century as a response to the disintegration of the established order and the loss of one’s identity. Along with other symptoms of mal du siècle boredom created the basis of Romantic identity and directed consciousness to new tracks. Thanks to ennui, a Romantic man released himself from the stagnation of everyday life that was distracting him from existential problems. Consequently, he discovered his uniqueness and established himself as an independent and self-conscious being.
