Summary/Abstract: This article tries to interpret Mazepa by Juliusz Słowacki concentrating on existential motifs in the poet’s works. The interpretation keyof this analysis is the Funeral Object (a definition proposed by Jan Urbain), which describes ontological status of the protagonists, the level of their consciousness as well as their spiritual development. Mazepais interpreted as a drama about non-recognition, wandering among half– truths and about a grave, which can define the limits of human interiorisation of existence. At the same time the Funeral Object – the grave, the sign object, and the limit object – reveals in the proposed interpretation a deep relationship between the imaginary value of the work with poet’s existential and spiritual situation that leads to his mystical works.
