Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the role of Diogenes of Sinope in the works of Cyprian Norwid. The subject for interpretation are both literary and artistic presentations of the Greek philosopher in the work of the Polish poet (private correspondence, Album Orbis, Behind the scenes [Za kulisami], Silence [Milczenie]). Diogenes’ thoughts and attitudes remained of an exceptional importance for Norwid as suggested by a rich repertoire of problems with which he was linked by the poet. These included such issues as attitude to the Platonic-Socratic tradition, the ideal of the wise, the status of knowledge, the relationship between philosophical theory and life practice, knowledge approximation, the public sphere and the word’s function within it, the criticism of culture, the diagnosis of the crisis of nineteenth-century civilisation, Norwid’s personal myth and the ethos of the poet, artist and thinker.
