“The Polish Cause Horizon” in the Light of Bolognese Lectures of Teofil Lenartowicz and Stefan Buszczyński

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the issue of cycle of speeches of Teofil Lenartowicz and Stefan Buszczyński, who in the eighties of the nineteenth century, were involved in the lectures at Adam Mickiewicz Academy in Bologna. Two works were inspected in the research: On the Character of Polish-Slavonic Poetry (O charakterze poezji polsko-słowiańskiej) by Lenartowicz, and Slavonic Cause. Poland and the Issue of Nations (Słowiańska sprawa. Polska i prawa narodów) by Buszczyński. The main theme of the article is the issue of the so-called spreading the Polish cause on the international arena by the speakers. Lenartowicz makes mainly Polish literature the vehicle of Polish cause. He interprets the works of eminent artists, especially of the Renaissance and Romanticism, pays homage to Mickiewicz, believing in prophetic dimension of poetry. Buszczyński stands up for respecting the natural right to existence of the Polish nation, emphasizes the overriding ideas of liberty, progress and civilisation. Both speakers creatively comment on Polish Romantic heritage.
