Summary/Abstract: The article presents various editorial difficulties, which arise during the preparation of the manuscript, artistic notes by the author of the novel The Doll (Lalka). So far stored in archives, the notebooks will be edited as a part of the critical edition of the The Complete Works of Bolesław Prus. Analysing the manuscripts and rewriting – conventionally – the real wealth of his original and non-standard notes is the work often off the grid for traditional, editorial techniques. The title formula “Exercises for Reflection” was coined by Prus himself and quite well expresses the continuous process of analysis, deduction, combination, attempts and revisions – the real “Benedictine work” for the editor of his notebooks. This record of Prus’ intellectual efforts could help to refresh his image of a thinker, an artist and a man (as a supplement for his biography). On the other hand, it could also act as an important contribution to editorial output.
