Summary/Abstract: This paper’s objective is to ilustrate the possibility of accomplishing a monetary union outside the economic union. To approach this objective i used the optimum currency area theory. I adressed the conditions required for any state to accede to the European Union, meaning that in order to do so, all states are required to include themselves in the Economic and Monetary Union, which implies changing it’s internal currency to the economic general: the euro. The case study refers to Romania’s possibility of reaching it’s objective of acceding to the euro zone by 2015. I have made an analisys based on the political sphere and also on the economic specialists’ points of view. This papers conclusion shows that the monetary union can not be achieved without a economic union, and i consider Romania’s impediments to be major which underlines the importance of the economic union.
