Summary/Abstract: In the present review article we address an unfortunately up-to-date dilemma, namely how to preserve the global environment and try to introduce a potential solution to this international collective action problem. In the first part we bring in the idea of public or collective goods, which serves as a special theoretical orientation to this problem, since trade, security and environment all have public good properties and are of international importance. The main concepts – such as public or collective goods, collective action, transaction costs or asymmetric information – of this approach belong to the realm of public choice theory (or modern political economy), not to speak about the impact of globalisation in world economy which can radically change the logic of collective action.
