Summary/Abstract: This paper is part of a larger critical study which attempts to analyze the reception of Johann Georg Hamann in recent English and American critique. The analysis primarily deals with the questions of Hamann’s literary style, alleged irrationalism, while also incorporating the biblical themes of God’s condescension, mysticism and scriptural hermeneutics in general. Hamann’s style has been the topic of much controversy due to the hermeneutical difficulties it imposes on the reader. With regard to these difficulties, some authors have inappropriately designated Hamann as an irrationalist. In light of Betz’s interpretation, this paper shows the misapplication of this concept on Hamann and how the German author used his literary style as a tool to counter rationalists’ abuse of human reason. In view of such misapplication, it was shown, from Hamann’s perspective, how human reason assumes the receptory function of biblical truths, but not without the reader’s prior emotional attunement to the Holy Writ, which is the necessary prerequisite for correct understanding. This scheme also incorporates a deep understanding of God’s condescencion and love for human beings, the themes which are in this paper discussed from a theologian’s point of view.
