Summary/Abstract: This essay is devoted to the explanation of the genesis of dynamic and statai passives, and to the different formal marking of imperfective and perfective forms in the Russian passive. It is claimed that the differences originate from the fact that both the -sja and the -n/t morphemes were originally middle markers, and as with numerous other languages, Russian also belonged to the active type as opposed to present-day Russian belonging to the nominative type.
