Summary/Abstract: The phenomenon of social work, which attracts numerous groups of volunteers from the NGO sector, activists of humanitarian organizations, local leaders, missionaries of all religious communities, and above all professionally prepared persons, is an accompanying element of the human being. However, in terms of a profession, we can talk about it from 1900 when Mary Richmond introduced the term social worker. In all the years that have passed since that event, a lot happened, but the most characteristic of them was, and still exists, the struggle for scientific independence of social work, the efforts for state recognition as a profession, the development of a special methodical opus, social management, ethical compatibility and appropriate education.
