Summary/Abstract: Songs are pleasant to the public but they are not fervently desired as ίμερόεσσα άοιδή in Homer. Contests of singers, the critical judgement of the poems, the comparison of artistic performances become a theme in Theocritus’ poetry. In Id. 1, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 we can find scenes, where the persons (shepherds and other) are singing to each other, i. e. they are both artists (poets) and audience, that means that the rule of the artist can be interchanged with the rule of the audience. The audience itself is creative, and the poet and the recipient are equal.
