The Determinants of Building Relationships Between Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises With Stakeholders

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – the aim of the article is to present the internal and external conditions that influence the development of relations with environmental entities, because as Sudolska (2011, s. 20) point out: “there is a cognitive knowledge gap in the literature about conditioning of relations”. Building up relations, requires knowledge about the environment and its conditions in order to be able to identify, which ones stimulate and which inhibit the development of relationships, that provide success to businesses. Design/methodology/approach – the study of literature, allowed to create a list of 25 external conditions and 13 internal conditions. The empirical material was obtained from a questionnaire survey of 44 companies (33 small- and 11 medium-sized), affiliated to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Toruń (2013–2015). Findings – empirical study shows that the development of relationships advantage of the surveyed enterprises is mainly influenced by endogenous factors, which is compatible with the premise of the resource school, and external factors have an inconsiderable impact on their development. However it is necessary to stay aware, that only a few exogenous determinants influence, to a small extent, the inhibition of the development of relationships. Originality/value – the article is cognitive and is the basis for further research of conditions (especially internal) for the building of relations of enterprises with stakeholders.
