Summary/Abstract: Purpose – identification of factors affecting the survival of newly established enterprises in Poland. Design/methodology/approach – it has been argued that the survival rate of newly created enterprises is more dependent on internal factors than on external factors. Among endogenous factors, the most important are the behavioural factors associated with the characteristics of the owner/manager and the access to external funding. The paper uses the results of panel data, published annually by the Central Statistical Office, covering basic information about the creation and operation conditions, development prospects of established enterprises in Poland. The research covers companies created in the years 2003–2013 and active year after the registration of business. Findings – the survival of newly established enterprises in Poland is a result of the interaction of various behavioral, organizational and financial factors. Originality/value – a strong correlation was found between the survival rate of newly created enterprises and the characteristics of the person running the company. The survival rate of enterprises after the first year of activity increases with the increase in the percentage of enterprises run by young people, persons for whom the created enterprise was the first job and people with secondary or tertiary education.
