Summary/Abstract: Some people in the West have developed e belief in reincarnation. This idea has never been accepted by Christianity. Our purpose is to analyze the problem in the context of contemporary Christian theology, especially taking into consideration the positions of H.U. von Balthasar, K. Rahner and J. Moltmann. The first of these indicates the incompatibility of belief in reincarnation with the grace of the Cross, while the other two would like to keep the discussion open. The official voice of the Church and the great majority of Christian theologians reject the idea of reincarnation. In the conclusion we formulate under three headings the clear theological arguments against reincarnation based on: the biblical concept of time and history (the seriousness of human life); the unity of soul and body; and Christian soteriology (no law of karma, no salvation through our own efforts, but through the grace of God in Christ).
