The Russian Costume of the 16th Century in the European Engravings of that Time: Reality and Fiction

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to Western European engravings of the 16th century as the sources of Russian costume history of that time. Several engravings, portraits of the tsars and images of Russian embassies were made by the eyewitnesses. Others are the prints from different costume books, which became very popular in the second half of the 16th century. The comparison of these two groups of engravings highlights the fact that the first one often served as the source of information for painters and engravers. Thus, images of Russians are often similar in different costume books. Reality and fantasy were often closely interwoven on the images of Russians in costume prints of the 16th century.
