Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the Malaysian tourism industry. Beginning with the history of governmental attempts to bolster this important segment of the economy, the paper describes the most important aspects of Malaysian tourism, including respects in which it has fallen short of the hopes of relevant parties. While there are several challenges that threaten to harm the industry, and to retard its development, the focus in the paper is in particular on the environmental aspects of these challenges, in particular the problems with air and water pollution that are contributed to by the burgeoning industry. The paper concludes with some concrete recommendations on how Malaysia can help to protect the environment while still protecting and growing its crucial tourism industry.
