Summary/Abstract: This article presents a brief history of some musical instruments from the Near East: Mesopotamia, Egypt and Israel – great cultures which were very connected with each other. It is commonly known that one of the instruments was the lyra, in biblical Israel named kinnōr’. Reading the professional literature we come to the conclusion that the lyra is not a harp and it was a big mistake to translate it like that. In “the Psalms”, the kinnōr’ was a tool for the author and it helped him to adore God (Ps 33,81,92,98,147,150), teach (Ps 49) and thanks to it the author had an opportunity to worship God (Ps 43,57,71,108). Generally speaking, the kinnōr is a symbol of sadness for the man who was a slave in Babylon (Ps 137).
