Summary/Abstract: The author studies metal helmets found on barbarian (Sarmatian, late Scythian, Meotic) and antique sites of Sarmatian time (3rd c. BC — 4th c. AD) from South-Eastern Europe. He uses existing typologies of helmets and suggests names for the earlier not distinguished types. The following types of helmets are considered: pseudo-Attic, Montefortino, Pilos, eastern Celtic, antique (Chalkidike, Attic, Weisenau), pseudo-Illyric, conical, frame helmets. Their morphology and origins, chronology of types and finds, ethnic belonging of sites with helmets, contacts and historical context of finds are studied. The author's special attention focuses on debates with opponents regarding the issues of chronology and cultural attribution of sites with helmets.
