Summary/Abstract: This paper treats the problem of a woman’s choice between marrying a man she does not love and refusing marriage for the independent life she loves. Louisa Ellis, the protagonist of the short story, is supposed to marry Joe Dagget who comes back from Australia after making a fortune. They have been engaged for 15 years, but in the meantime Louisa has discovered she loves living her solitary domestic life more than anything else and she finally has the courage to choose this life.
