Summary/Abstract: One of the important inspiration sources of the artist and man of letters Josef Váchal (1884–1969) were fair pictures that date back at least to the seventeenth century. The article shows in which way Váchal perceived these works. It compares his attitude with the attitude of Josef Čapek and the members of the inter-war avant-garde of the circle Devětsil and Skupina surrealistů v ČSR (The Group of surrealists in Czechoslovakia; Karel Teige, Jindřich Štýrský, Jaromír Funke etc.) The example of the fair tables illustrates the change that reception of popular culture went from Expressionism to surrealistic works.
