Summary/Abstract: The point of departure of the article is a thesis of F. X. Šalda about imperfection of a work of art as a precondition of its immortality (“dlouhoživectví”) and its later actualization in the work of a literary critic Jan Lopatka. In the work of Vladislav Vančura we can follow a tension between free artistic imagination on one side and programmatic “framing” of a work on the other side. The other part of the article presents a polemic with Kundera’s conception of a novel as a completion of a work on a aesthetic project.
