Summary/Abstract: The article deals with six novels by Jiří Kratochvil written in eighties and nineties of the 20-th century. These novels are closely connected one with another, while the first of them, Urmedvěd, can be found – in many aspects – the source for others. Author himself calls Urmedvěd „the book of life necessity“ (according to him each author writes one or two books of this kind and all others are only derivated from it). This „life necessity“ is undoubtably present even in Uprostřed nocí zpěv, but in following novels it grows weak – especially in last one Noční tango. But Noční tango is, after all, a sort of parody to author´s previous novels – Jiří Kratochvil closes his novel cycle by his typical irony and self-irony.
