Polish Zloty on UK Foreign Exchange Market

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The paper focuses on PLN FX trading in United Kingdom. Author starts from the presentation of geographical structure of global PLN FX market. The purpose of the article is to indicate characteristics of PLN FX market located in London. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology used in the paper is based on the analysis of PLN FX market: global and created by the most active financial institutions located in London. Author applies market statistics prepared by Bank for International Settlements and Foreign Exchange Joint Standing Committee (market survey). Author uses information from National Bank of Poland (institution survey). Findings – PLN FX market attracts many global investors. That is why offshore market is bigger than domestic market. The most important financial centre for PLN traders is London with a share on the level 44%. British investors are interested in USD/PLN market (average daily turnover was over $10 billion in October 2016) and EUR/PLN market (turnover in EUR/PLN was almost $6 billion in October 2016). Polish zloty market in London is the interbank market, especially created by market-makers of UK foreign exchange market. The role of PLN for the biggest financial trading institutions located in London is limited. Analysing currency distribution of reported UK foreign exchange market turnover, percentage shares of average daily turnover for PLN was 0,8% in October 2016. Originality/value – Researches related to Polish zloty forex market are done from global or local perspective. But the author focuses on the global financial centre (London), where the turnover in PLN forex market is the biggest. The paper contains complex characteristic of London as a place of PLN exchange. The author analyzes currency, transaction, and investor structure of PLN forex market in London. The unique is the description of London as the segment of PLN offshore market.
