Summary/Abstract: Post-war relations between the Department of Czech Language of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University and the Institute for Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences were very close, both in terms of research activities and in personal relations. Their nature was largely determined by Bohuslav Havránek, the most important linguist of Czechoslovakia of his time, a man who was able to skilfully and honourably navigate the maze of restrictions to which academic education and scientific research was subjected at that time.
