The phenomenon of the house in Gothic tradition (based on stories by Edgar Alan Poe and Stefan Grabinski)

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the motif of a house in Gothic literary tradition, where the image of the castle-house is fundamental. Based on an example of stories by E.A. Poe and S. Grabinski it is shown that the motif of a house is closely connected with main characters’ spiritual life. Physical and psychological crisis, inner harmony imbalance of “I – home” can lead to the transformation of an individual, to his degradation, it can induce the feeling of horror.
