Summary/Abstract: Disability is perceived as health and psychological problems, but also as difficulties with functioning within the society. The last example is very important from a sociological point of view because it has impact on everyday life and social roles. The literature shows how most people perceive the disabled. This kind of perception takes a certain shape due to widespread stereotypes. Such attitudes may ofted lead to the isolation of the “different” ones. This article presents mechanisms of social exclusion which were developed in Poland during the transformation period after 1989, with illustrative examples of people with disabilities.
