Summary/Abstract: Battle of Velbazhd (1330) was recorded as a significant event in the collective consciousness of the Serbian people. Large inter-ethnic conflicts and national disasters during the Middle Ages, were interpreted as God's anger and punishment for sins committed by one nation. Violent change of hierarchical relations in society was seen as a serious sin, which results in God's punishment, in the form of a huge national disaster. The most important testimony in the Serbian medieval literature on the battle of Velbazhd, was given by Gregory Tsamblak in his "Žijtije Svetog Stefana De čanskog (Hagiography of St. Stefan of Dečani ) ." In this article we will try to look at how the notion of another was constructed, when describing large ethnic conflicts. Also, taking this medieval hagiography as example, we will follow the development of the motives of the victim, as well as the importance of this concept for the life of the medieval man.
