Summary/Abstract: This article presents a phenomenon of the Afro – Brazilian religions which developed in Brazil within the African slave trade (16 – 19th. century) and at the beginning of the 20th. century, like: candomblé, macumba and umbanda. The study of these religions is focused on the historical, terminological and ethno – religious dimensions. Nowadays umbanda seems to be the most popular and developed Afro – Brazilian religion in Brazil. The dynamic development of the Afro – Brazilian religions is one of the challenges for a research and for the Church as well.
