Summary/Abstract: The primary goal of this article is to analyze the connotations which have been given in the last decades to the concept of „public sphere” in Eastern Europe; what the phrase „freedom of expression” means for those people who had lived under dictatorship and experienced the dawn of a democratic society, on one hand, and for those who never knew the barriers imposed by the restrictions of a totalitarian regime, on the other hand; to what extend and why words such as „manipulation” and „censorship” are being opposed to the „freedom of expression” in the collective conscientiousness; the manner in which these terms have changed the connotations under the influence of the transformations that have taken place in the public and private life in the last decades.
