Information systems and their role in supporting logistic services of 3PL operators

Summary/Abstract: In Business Logistics Department at University of Economics in Katowice the explore research studies were executed to find out and identify: paths of logistic service providers evolution now and in the nearest future, elements that affect and build the competitive advantage of 3PL operators, aspects related to IS/IT developing and how all these elements create new possibilities for progress or transformation of 3PL logistics service providers. As a result of the research there were recognized new trends and elements. First of all these elements relate to the full implementation of information systems (and/or IT) that enable “every- day” operation management to be visible at real-time of reaction (the total cost optimization). They are also related to new trends in logistics, such as elements of developing systems for calculating cost of impact on environment through logistic activities. Some examples show that new fields of competition or specialization has been created – first of all connected with the elements of city logistics. The paper describes the results of research and most important conclusions relating to these aspects.
