Summary/Abstract: The term region became a fashionable expression, a vogue-word, a cliché in the seventies and in the eighties. Even so, in the nineties it was a star expression used by many and interpreted in numerous ways. This Latin word in the everyday language is used as a synonym for area, land, zone, landscape, district or a territorial unit within states. Of course, for the geographers, the terms landscape or district have completely different connotations and do not regard them as technical terms with the same meaning. Therefore, it is important to make it clear what the representatives of the various disciplines mean by the word region and what kind of regions we may talk about when discussing the regional policy of the European Union.
