Summary/Abstract: Text as such can be mediated through various sign systems – using one or more at a time. A good example of the latter option is comic art, which uses both verbal and visual means of expression to transmit its message. From the narratological point of view, comics create a story of multiple ‘texts’ that are presented simultaneously. Words, pictures and conventional formal features that all carry different meanings in their particular sign systems, combine during the reading process to form one textual entirety. The specific blend that words and images form in the comics works somewhat like a language with its own grammar, syntax and rhythm, being the defining feature of comic art.
