Summary/Abstract: The present study is an enquiry into the theory of fictional worlds and the top three contemporary literary genres likely to configure imaginary realms: utopia, science-fiction and “fantasy” fiction. Modal logic, linguistics (speech acts theory in particular), analytical philosophy, ‘philosophical irrealism’, and, finally, current cosmological models, provide the source for the theoretical framework underpinning the notion of possible worlds. The possible universes of general relativity, quantum physics and the strings theory find their correspondents in the fictional chronotopes dramatized by utopian discourses, science fiction and “fantasy” fiction, the distinctive traits of which we hereby seek to reveal.
