Summary/Abstract: The present article deals with the problem of a specific comparison between Nestor, the king of Pylos, and Richard I the Lionheart. The research is concentrated on the use of the image of the ancient Greek king and his qualities as an illustration for the character of various medieval figures. The relation between the English ruler and the Homer’s hero is clarified in the broader context of the crusaders’ ideology. It should be taken into consideration the preserved text of Joseph of Exeter, dedicated to the Trojan cycle, in which the medieval author bound the Third crusade and the ancient Trojan War. The use of this image in connection with the English king is a result of the spirit of the age.
