Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the rules of the Austrian Public Notary order (1855) and the Yugoslav Law on Public Notaries (1930) that covered the organization and the position of the institution of the public notaries. The particular attention is given to the way the public notary offices were organized, the procedures of namin them to their posts and the formal norms that had to be satisfied by a public naotary could commence with his work. The article also covers the most important features of the work of public notaries - the conjunction between the duty of public notary and lawyer and the lack of the public notary chamber as a professional union.
