Summary/Abstract: The article presents methods of expressing put-downs in parliamentary speech in which the speaker uses so-called benefactive speech acts, including, among others, wishes. Based on an ironic statement by an opposition MP in the Polish parliament, it shows how an initially benefactive speech act can be changed into criticism of a political opponent, leading to a put down. The article also presents discussions from selected research papers by Polish academics containing definitions of wishes and problems with systematising these speech acts. Finally, a comparison is made of speeches in the Polish and German parliaments where, in material previously researched by the author, no instances of the ironic use of wishes to put down a political opponent were noted.
