Summary/Abstract: The issue of the cult of St Clement of Rome in the Croatian lands is based on the two civilisational and culturological paths of its emergence and survival, which augment each other. The first relates to the Early Christian Roman tradtion and its heritage, through which the hagiographic Clement literary tradition made its way also to Croatian territory. On this occasion, we present the transliterated text of the reading for the feast day of St Clement of Rome from the Croatian Glagolitic Moscow Breviary dating from 1442/1443. The second direction of the dissemination of the cult of St Clement is linked with the Slavic Cyril and Methodius legacy. In that sense, the relics of St Clement that the Holy Brothers carried through the Slavic lands during their Slavic mission influenced the confirmation of the already existing Roman Clement cult, and to its emergence in places in which it had previously been unknown, that is, the rural Glagolitic communities. It was in that context that the Poljice tradition of blessing draught animals - horses, mules, and donkeys – on the feast day of St Clement (November 23) was formed, this being unique to the entire Croatian territory. Hence, we underscore the importance of the blessing of oats from the Glagolitic Novak Missal of 1368 and its culturological significance within the framework of the blessing of horses in general, and that in Poljice in particular.
