Summary/Abstract: The paper is a brief attempt to describe civil demonstrations as an element of the Polish political culture. As forms of protest, demonstrations could basically become legal in the public space after 1989. Still, at that time they were a relatively niche form of political participation. Only the events of the last decade, first the Smolensk plane crash and then breaching the Constitution by the parliamentary majority, the President of the Republic of Poland and the Prime Minister caused street demonstrations to be a visible element of public life not only in the capital. Our “retardation” as regards demonstrations (compared to countries with longer democratic tradition) has made street demonstrations as popular among sociologists, political scientists or anthropologists as never before.
