Summary/Abstract: The paper is an attempt at a theoretical and methodological reflection on the methods employed to research social protests. The key descriptive and analytical category proposed in the paper is the visual category. The visual setting of social protests serves primarily the creation of a “symbolic format” thereof. It also allows drawing conclusions regarding such properties of the protest as the extent of its professionalisation, determination of the participants or the emotional intensity. The analysis of the visual aspect of social protests may be treated as discourse analysis. This specific discourse, which is part of the iconospehre, usually shows was has already been said (or is being said). However, it may sometimes communicate meanings which had not been present earlier in the off-iconic form.
