The Greeting in The Traditional Etiquette. Formulating Research Topics

Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the greeting from a semiotic perspective, interpreting it as an act of communication, of great complexity. The greeting is presented as a part of the traditional etiquette, taking the form of a dialogue or a rite and implies several languages of communication. She argues that the verbal greeting is correlated both to the cosmic time and to the specific of the actions performed by the persons that are involved in the communication relationship. The greeting through gestures is correlated to space criteria and takes into consideration both the entire body of the person and distinct parts of it. The diverse forms of kissing: the hands, the lips, the forehead or the crown, are related to social statutes, group relationships and life situations, developing various functions. The greeting, in general, updates social relationships, enhances the social cohesion and asserts the system of values of that community. The study brings into the scientific environment various categories of sources, formulates certain research topics that can be further investigated.
