Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the understanding of the phrase “to be” within the reference plane of the philosophical thought by Étienne Gilson. Due to the abundance of the philosophy and vocabulary practised by the said Author, the paper undertakes the analysis of the phrase “to be” in consideration of its essential functions as well as the role that it plays to the extent of the existential judgement. Attention is paid to the verb “to be” that represents two diverse functions: cohesive (link) and existential (affirmative). It indicates that the existential function plays the crucial role in explaining the structure of reality, as it is the essential element in understanding judgement, this function being used for declaring (affirming) real existence of being.
