Summary/Abstract: The paper refers to the memories of Toma Rapa and Ion Cuchiur, two peasants from Năruja and Nerej villages, respectively, in Vrancea County, Romania. Toma Rapa and Ion Cuchiur were interviewed in 2002, given their presence within the research campaigns of the Sociological School that Professor Dimitrie Gusti had coordinated in interwar Romania. Important information is thus offered on D. Gusti’s personality among Romanian peasants, as well as on what could be called the „civilizing work” that the Romanian school of rural sociology developed in the 1930s Vrancea. Alongside D. Gusti, the names of two other great Romanian scholars – sociologist Henri H. Stahl and physical anthropologist Francisc J. Rainer – are also evoked in the accounts of T. Rapa and I. Cuchiur.
