Summary/Abstract: The objective of this paper is to point to the existence of many different realities, or “sub-universes”, on the example of the tone poem Don Quixote (1897) by Richard Strauss subtitled Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character. The main theme, followed by all of the ten variations which constitute this piece will be analysed as the “sub-universe” per se. In this way, the tone poem will also be regarded as the merging point of idios kosmos and koinos kosmos, the merging point of ultimate reality (the world of perception, in other words, the physical world, as William James presented) and the fantastic world of Don Quixote, i.e., as the merging point of different voices, that is, the point of dialogue of the self and the other.
