Summary/Abstract: The terms deconstruction and reconstruction represent a special kind of practice wherein the relationship between the elements of a whole are being examined, or are re-connected or revised. The purpose of this paper is to present the steps of deconstruction and reconstruction of the myths in the example of two different genres of Richard Strauss (1864–1949), one of which is his tone poem Don Juan (1888) and the other his opera Ariadne auf Naxos (1916). Both of these works are based on myths (Greek mythology and the character of Don Juan that became a myth over time) as very “fruitful” resources for adaptation, variations, transformations, etc., that embody the new ways of interpretation by using special artistic reactions and experiments. Moreover, the distinction between the processes of deconstruction and reconstruction of the mythical content will be critically discussed by interpreting musical and linguistic elements of specific characters of Strauss’s opera and tone poem.
