Summary/Abstract: The author of the present article examines views expressed by Antanas Maceina (1908-1987), a famous Lithuanian philosopher of the interwar period and professor at Kaunas University, on the prerequisites and preconditions for the formation of nationality, national identity, and the national state. Maceina belongs to the group of Lithuanian philosophers who were raised as personalities and intellectuals in the independent Lithuanian Republic. After graduating from Kaunas University, he continued his studies abroad. After World War II, he settled in West Germany and took teaching positions in German universities. The theoretical analysis of this article focuses on the doctoral thesis by Maceina, subsequently published as an extensive 677-page study, The National Upbringing, which gives an exhaustive survey of the theoretical problems in question.
