Summary/Abstract: In Jacques the Fatalist, Diderot uses the shape of the story told to theothers by an always present narrator. This one speaks with thereader, livens the story by his laughter and his irony, reveals thearbitrary power of an intrigue, associates him with the decision oncertain details, convinces him of his creative omnipotence, interestshim rather in the creation than in the anecdote. The storyteller insidethe narrative authenticates the events from the story and presentsthem as a witness or as a character.
