Summary/Abstract: In the 19th century historiography was a national endeavour all over Europe, which helped to develop national consciousness, to validate interests and to explore the actions of the ancestors. Imre Mikó (1805–1876) also believed in these values. Mikó’s main innovation was the founding of Transylvanian Museum Society, which functioned as a Hungarian academy of sciences in Transylvania and is nowadays again the leading institution for historiography and historical research.
