INCREASED MEDICAL MALPRACTICE EXPENDITURES AS A MAIN DETERMINANT OF GROWTH IN HEALTH CARE SPENDING

Summary/Abstract: In the present paper, I focus on the function of the malpractice system in U.S. health care, the effect of medical malpractice litigation on the status and attainability of health care, and the reaction of physicians to medical malpractice reforms. The findings of this study have implications for the functioning of the medical malpractice system, the impact between malpractice pressure and aggregate health care expenditures, and the link between the rise of malpractice costs and the distribution of health care.
